Classroom Music: Children have weekly music instruction in grades PreK-6. Classroom instruction promotes good singing, the development of the ear, and rhythmic coordination. Children are exposed to the fundamentals and foundations of musical concepts, and traditional and varied musical styles. Students will learn how to play a variety of percussion instruments. Grade three students are taught recorder (a simple wind instrument) once per week. Grade 6 students are taught how to play the ukulele and the piano
Vocal Ensembles: Chorus and Choir are performance ensembles. The purpose of the Chorus and Choir is to provide an opportunity for a more advanced choral experience through exposure to a variety of choral styles and literature. Accurate pitch, good articulation, clear, high tone quality appropriate to children’s voices at this age, and an attitude of teamwork and cooperation are expected. All fifth and sixth graders attend Chorus once per week during school hours. This is a day class with performance commitments.
Newbury Elementary School Choir is an after school select choir that rehearses one day a week after school on Mondays from 3-4pm. Students in Choir are given the opportunity to perform music in a smaller setting with a more challenging repertoire. The Choir is open to students in grades 5 and 6. Students will perform at the school concerts as well as school assemblies and community events.
Instrumental Music: Students in grades 4-6 have the opportunity to further their talents by playing a band instrument. Small group music lessons are given once a week, for 20 minutes, during the school day. 4th graders will have lessons on either a Monday or Tuesday, 5th graders on Mondays, 6th graders on Tuesdays. In September, the 5th & 6th grade students will also start Advanced Band rehearsals on Tuesdays from 3:00 - 4:00 PM. The 4th graders will start Beginner Band rehearsals in January, after school on Mondays, from 3:00 - 4:00 PM. If students are taking lessons, they must also participate in the after school band rehearsals. Students may also be selected to participate in the District Stage Band. This ensemble is for students selected from all three of the Elementary schools. Rehearsals for the District Stage Band start in January, and are on Tuesday afternoons from 4:30 - 5:30PM at NES.
Concert Dress: Chorus, Choir, and Band members are encouraged to wear a plain, white blouse or shirt, and a solid dark colored pant or skirt to performances.
